In Tanzania, several senior officials of the main opposition Chadema party were in jail as of late Monday night. They include national chairman Freeman Mbowe and deputy chairman Tundu Lissu. They were detained on their way to World Youth Day celebrations organized by the party’s Youth Council. A Tanzanian government spokesperson did not respond to our request for an interview. But the police said they banned the event because it posed a threat to peace and could lead to unrest. Amnesty International and several other rights groups have called for the immediate release of the Chadema leaders.
