Over the years, decades and even centuries, the outsized exploits of artisitic icons have provided the fodder for all the myths and mysteries surroundeing their public personas. Tales of excess, of demanding behavior, even criminal acts have all been part of creating these legends.

However, what is the impact of that sort of life on their family? That question drove Tom Rachman to write his latest book, "The Italian Teacher."

It's the story of Pinch Bavinsky, a young man living in the shadow of a famous father who fled the family to become a painter and live consequence-free in 1950's Rome.

In a wide-ranging discussion, Russell Bowers spoke with the acclaimed author of "The Imperfestionists" on the timing of this new novel's release, what family now means to him, and how he goes about naming his characters.
