Your June/July guest is the great Alto Saxophonist Phil Lasley. Phil explained what it was like growing up in 1950’s Detroit. Although his earliest experiences were based in bebop, he has played just about every style of music imaginable. Phil explained how he was drawn to New York to play with people like Tina Brooks, Sunny Murray, Clifford Jarvis, Andrew Hill and Cecil Taylor. Phil shared his ideas on playing different musical styles and his experiences performing with R&B giants like Otis Redding and comedians like Red Foxx.
Three songs were taken from his album The Lincoln Street Music Company. Along with Phil Lasley on alto sax, is the great Faruq Z. Bey playing tenor and trumpeter Doug Halladay. The rhythm section consists of pianist Keith Vreeland, John Dana on Bass and the fiery drummer, Danny Spencer. The other two cuts come from the more straight ahead trio album Jasi. In addition to Lasley is ubiquitous bassist, Rodney Whitaker and the legendary New York pianist John Hicks . Exciting, adventurous, thoughtful, and swinging are just a few words describing the music heard this month.
