Joseph Pilates developed a regiment he called “Contrology”, which later became known as "Pilates". This method had influences of: greek calisthenics, gymnastics, swimming, martial arts, yoga and diving. He was a sickly child and found that this form of exercise helped him greatly and he dedicated his life to helping others learn this method as well.
In this episode, Alex and Kelly take a look at the German man who started teaching and developing his unique exercise regimen in an internment camp in England during World War 1. We consider why there are stereotypes about the kinds of people who practice pilates. And we work up a plan to bring back turn-of-the century exercise equipment like the belt vibrator, the splendo massager, and the sauna tub with live streamed classes. If you have ever tried pilates and wondered how it all got started, or if you have never tried it, but just want to hear a great story about an interesting dead guy, you should definitely check out this episode!
