This week's guest on the Discover Grow Shinecast is Gerald Smith, a personal fitness trainer in London.

Gerald is a former amateur boxer, writer and speaker who specializes in high intensity interval training. Gerald's background in boxing lead him to develop a system called HEET (high energy efficient training), a workout so intense it’s the equivalent of 10 rounds of boxing.

Gerald has a free guide available called The Fit Executive where he shares tips on HIIT exercises, diet tips and fat burning recipes. You can sign up for the guide here: http://personaltrainercityoflondon.co.uk/subscribe/

In our conversation, Gerald gives more details on this HEET approach to fitness which starts with eating right and then adds the high-intensity interval training to the mix. The idea is to maximize fitness gains through the short bursts of high-energy workouts.

Fitness should start from the premise that you want your workouts to be fun--so you don't quit.

Before designing any workout plan, you need to start by deciding what you want. If you want an awesome body, then your workout (and meal plan) will be different from someone who's looking to gain overall fitness and simply feel better. We talk about different workouts for each goal.

Midday through the interview, I asked Gerald to describe a training protocol for a hypothetical 35-ish year old male who wants to lose about 15-20 pounds using the HEET approach and Gerald provides an awesome framework for how he would develop a diet and training regimen for this hypothetical person.

Why do so many people abandon their fitness goals? Often they have the wrong expectations about how fast they will see results. They may have the wrong plan for the desired results. There's also the issue of time--which is the main benefit of a high-intensity interval training regiment like HEET.

Gerald also talks about the impact of gut health on weight loss and how hormones--like cortisol--can lead to different weight loss outcomes, depending on the individual.

We talk about the importance of sleep, generally, and Gerald explains the role of sleep in regulating cortisol and other hormone levels. It’s all connected.
