Kathryn Erickson joins the show to double-click on a few of the exciting possibilities she's tracking with the potential for continued improvement in Cassandra performance. Hardware options on the horizon include persistent memory, FPGAs and networked storage). At the operating system level, she's tracking asynchronous IO support in Linux via the io_uring library. Java performance continues to become more predictable with the Z Garbage Collector (ZGC), which is already available as an experimental option in Java 12. Finally, Cassandra specific improvements include adding a pluggable storage engine API, and automated operations (AIOps) for more efficient tuning and collaboration between nodes.
