Thank you for listening to Eat.Laugh.sail, this is episode 016, and my guest is musician and Pirate Tugboat Bromberg. We sat down for lunch at The Fireside at the Resort at Port Ludlow. It was really fun getting to know Tugboat and talking about his seafaring life, and his background with music. Thank you to the Resort at Port Ludlow for having us!

As a young man, I started my working life at sea. Starting in fishing and shrimp boats out of Key West, I moved up to working on the great tugs and towboats as a deckhand on the Mississippi River, and then on to the inter coastal Waterway into Texas. I learned my trade as a seafarer and enjoyed listening to the older sailors talk about the traditions of the sailor’s life and the stories of where they had been. Joining the Seafarer’s International Union in 1977, I went to work on harbor tugs in Houston and down the Texas coast feeling envious of those sailors headed off to distant shores. It didn’t take me long to finally sign aboard a cargo ship and for the next 27 years I sailed on ships to ports all over the world.
I don’t remember a time when I didn’t play music, though I went through a variety of instruments before settling on the guitar—the one that has been my traveling companion throughout my life. On the beach between ships and over the years, I would try to make a living as a performer playing country, folk, and bluegrass music while traveling all over the country, playing and meeting all the people who would shape my music and my life. On board ships I would also entertain the crew with my songs. During that time, I also tried my hand at writing songs.
Finally settling in Washington State, on the Kitsap Peninsula, I started playing as a solo performer and recorded my first CD “Nickel Songs And Dime Songs”. With Liam Hires playing mandolin and banjo and Diane Johnson on the upright bass we formed the bluegrass band: Crabgrass. We performed together for about 4 years till Liam passed away in a tragic accident. During that time, we recorded 2 CDs “Shudda Been There” and “On The Road Again.”Also during that time, I was doing some historical reenacting. After regressing from the 1850’s fur trade, I found myself as a pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. Learning and performing nautical songs and sea chanties came naturally, and in 2008 I recorded the CD “Scallywag”. 2009 brought the CD “Here There Be Pirates” and in 2012 I recorded “Schooner Or Later”. I can now be found pirating and performing along the shores of Puget Sound.
