Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com BELARUSIAN/RUSSIAN ELEVATOR PRODUCTION TO START IN MOSCOW Belarus-based Mogilevliftmash and Russia's Vozduhotehnika have agreed to start producing elevators in Moscow this year, reaching an annual capacity of 10,000 units, Belteleradiocompany reports. The source observed more than 40,000 lifts were installed in Russia last year, with 90% produced domestically. All obsolete elevator equipment must be replaced in Russia by 2020, per Eurasian Economic Union technical requirements. Head of the Russian Lift Association Sergey Chernyshev said production of elevators in Moscow will "create healthy competition for existing Russian manufacturers, which will lead to an increase in the quality, quantity and technical characteristics of our elevators." ADLDINGER JOINS VFA VFA-Interlift e.V. of Germany has acquired the services of Wolfgang Adldinger, a specialist with many years of experience working in national and European committees and advisory bodies. Adldinger's role is to intensify collaboration with national and international associations and institutions. As a freelancer, he will represent VFA members' interests in Germany and Brussels, Belgium, coordinating the flow of information between the association’s diverse areas, as well as providing support to the VFA team. Following many years of collaboration with the European Lift Association, EU-NB-L and CEN, Adldinger was most recently responsible for the area of lifts and standards with the Wittur group of companies. He is also a well-known speaker and author in the European industry. ALIMAK’S NORWEGIAN OPERATION LANDS OILFIELD ORDER Heis-Tek AS, the Norwegian operation of Alimak Group, has won a US$1.9-million order from Singapore-based Semcorp Marine to provide three traction lifts for the Johan Castberg floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) in the Barents Sea. This follows a US$1.38-million order for an industrial traction lift from Statoil ASA through Aker Solutions for use in the same oilfield. Set for delivery in the second quarter of 2019, the latest order is for lifts that will serve the hull and living quarters of the FPSO, under construction in Singapore. DEPARTURE FROM STANDARD ARCHITECTURE FOR DUBAI HOTEL A deal has been reached to build a 54-story hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai that RSG Group of Cos. describes as a "marked departure from standard architectural schemes," ConstructionWeekOnline.com reports. The design features asymmetrical balconies and pointed and tapered sides to create a layered effect. RSG awarded the construction contract for Sabah Rotana to Al Habbai Contracting. Containing a hotel, hotel apartments, restaurants and meeting rooms in the Sufouh Gardens community, Sabah Rotana is scheduled to be complete prior to Expo 2020 Dubai. Construction, which promises to "inspire and challenge" the project team, is expected to take two-and-a-half years. TALLEST BAY-AREA BUILDING SOUTH OF SAN FRANCISCO MULLED Chinese developer Kylli, a subsidiary of Genzon Investment Group, wants to build a mixed-use development in Santa Clara, California, that would include the tallest Bay-Area building south of San Francisco — an office tower of up to 50 stories, the Daily Post reports. The current tallest buildings in Santa Clara and San Francisco, respectively, are 22 and 62 stories (Salesforce Tower). Also proposed for the 49-acre site are a 35-story apartment building at 3005 Democracy Way (previously occupied by Yahoo), a 400,000-sq.-ft. hotel and 20 acres of greenspace. The City of Santa Clara would need to lift density restrictions and was moving in that direction earlier this year.
