In this second half of the two-part episode, Dr. MJ Erickson-Hogue interviews Dr. Lori Weichenthal, MD and Dr. Jay Kaplan about the importance of wellness for medical caregivers and the effect that it has on patients. Their discussion notes the clinical areas most at risk for burnout as well as how to prevent and treat it. They also identify actions that caregivers can take to embed self-care within their daily routines.

Both Dr. Weichenthal and Dr. Kaplan are involved in national programs focused on clinician wellness.

Dr. Jay Kaplan, MD is the Medical Director of Care Transformation for LCMC Health in New Orleans. He is the Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Section of Emergency Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center and is the attending emergency physician and academic faculty for the Emergency Medicine Residency at the University Medical Center New Orleans. Dr. Kaplan is a past President of the American College of Emergency Physicians and current national faculty for ACEP, and he has been a member of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience for the past several years.

Dr. Lori Weichenthal, MD, FACEP, RYT is the Assistant Dean of Graduate Medical Education at UCSF Fresno. She is also the Associate Program Director of Emergency Medicine and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine. Her expertise in wellness stems from developing curriculum and support services for trainees.
