Jehovah's Witnesses& Teen Recruits (2)

He had a sincere heart and a burning desire to learn his Bible. He did not realize that lurking around the corner was a ticking time bomb ready to deliver explosive, cultish teachings designed to trap his mind and

Some people are born and raised in the religion, others are recruited by friends and relatives, still others have been contacted in the door-to-door preaching. But, no one thinks about those youngsters at school that come across the well dressed, well behaved Jehovah’s Witness student that attract other well-intentioned students seeking answers to life’s most difficult questions.

Shakeem Holmes is one such individual. Being a shy student, he steered clear of the hustle and bustle of the crowded lunchroom during break. Instead, he opted to find peace and solace in the library. During his frequent trips to the library, he noticed a fellow student reading his Bible and was quite impressed. After several weeks, Shakeem took it upon himself to approach the student and inquired more about the Bible.

Like most dedicated youths, the Jehovah’s Witness did not hesitate to have Bible discussions with his classmate. However, Shakeem was unaware that his classmate was also introducing publications to help steer his thinking to the Watchtower, Bible & Tract Society’s explanation of scripture.

Throughout his study, everything he was learning made logical sense. He was perplexed and frustrated with the things happening around him and in the world in general. Certainly, there must be something to all of the crime and violence, and to his amazement, the Jehovah’s Witnesses had all of the answers. He felt good about what he was learning and surmised, “this must be the truth”.

What makes Shakeem unique, is that no one in his family are Jehovah’s Witnesses. When they discovered he was studying with them, they were not too happy. His grandmother was not necessarily singling out the Jehovah’s Witnesses because according to Shakeem, she is not fond of any religion. Studying with the Jehovah’s Witnesses and attending meetings at the congregation posed no issues because he was able to meet with his classmate at school and the Kingdom Hall was across the street from his house. Nevertheless, he continued forward and was eventually dedicated and baptized. Not long after, he quickly realized that something was amiss.

In this interview, Shakeem discussed the three things that peaked his interest about the religion and the three things that finally caused him to leave the group and fade away. In hindsight, Shakeem readily testifies that everything is not always as it seems on the surface. It is not until after he joined the group that their true colors appeared. He talks about the good…bad…and the ugly of the Watchtower, Bible & Tract Society.

Looking back over the choices he made, Shakeem regrets not taking the time to do his research to learn more about the history of the Jehovah’s Witness faith. After the love bombing ceased, his joyous experience quickly began to fizzle. He admits that he wasted five years of his life, gave up opportunities to advance his education for better career choices. If he would have only known then what he knows now, he could be much further ahead. He is now enrolled in college, soon to graduate. He recommends that anyone studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses to do their research prior to making any commitments.
