Did you know that despite being highly influential, culturally cognizant, academically effective, Black males make up just 2% of K-12 teachers in the US? As the classroom becomes more diverse, students of color deserve to see themselves not only reflected in the materials covered but also in the teachers and school leaders showing up for them each day. This week, we sit down with Maurice Blackmon, an inspiring high school English teacher in Brooklyn, NY who integrates social justice, advocacy, and community activism into his pedagogy and with the help of his students, started their schools first Black Student Union!
