Thank you for allowing me to take part in the service today. This is my tribute to me Dear Friend and Mentor Ken Coe. I received the news early this morning that my Dear Friend and mentor Ken Coe passed onto glory! Ken passed away at home around 2am, he was under Hospice care. Ken was 78 years of age. I worked for Ken and his lovely wife DeEtta at WLOI/WCOE radio in Laporte, Indiana in the early 80’s. I do not know if I have ever had as much fun in my 40 years in Broadcasting, as I did working for Ken and DeEtta! Ken is a member of the Indiana Broadcasters Hall-of-Fame. Serving the people of the Laporte County area was tops with Ken. He always made sure the stations had solid local news and sports coverage. There are not many family owned radio stations left in America. Ken also hosted the program “Sound off”, where listeners could call in and voice their opinion on local and state news. Much good came out of that program with action being taken by public officials on the concerns of listeners. I was blessed to host the program from time to time when I worked at the stations. If there was a concern of residents in Laporte County, Ken made sure it was covered by his news department. WCOE has been known as the “Indiana Sports Leader” having broadcast more local sports than any other stations. Funeral arrangements are pending with Haverstock Funeral Home in Laporte, Indiana. Please keep DeEtta and the entire family in your prayers. Gonna miss you BIG GUY!
