Dr. Sullivan (AKA Sully) was an emergency room physician for 25 years. During his time in the ER he noticed a trend of conditions people presented with. Blood pressure, bad cholesterol, type two diabetes, and obesity were among the most common symptoms he would see on a day to day basis. He refers to this syndrome of syndromes as the sick aging phenotype. This syndrome runs rampant in our society today. Having dealt with the same reoccurring issues year after year with a lot of repeat patients, Dr. Sullivan found barbell training and saw the value in its ability to arrest or even reverse the sick aging phenotype. Since retiring from medicine in 2017 Sully now runs his new practice, Grey Steel Strength And Conditioning, full time in Farminton MI.
He is the co-author of The Barbell Prescription with Andy Baker and the author of several dozen papers, abstracts, research articles, and book chapters mostly on the topic of neurological emergencies.
Sully and I discuss the life changing benefits of strength training (particularly with barbells), what specific movement patterns should be emphasized, and why strength should be prioritized for more quality years of life.
