The veteran coach makes a few things clear from the start: High School athletes may look a little different today but on the inside they are the same as when he started coaching back around 1990, Yes, he thinks football is as safe as many other sports with the precautions and attention that head injuries are now getting, and no, he does not like specialization, he thinks high school athletes should play as many different sports as they can. He will explain all this in detail on the show Sunday. This man has been around and he is not shy about sharing his opinions which makes for a lively interview when Ed Lulie and myself talked with him earlier this week. And this year he has a very good team! He cannot say enough good things about his explosive running back duo of Joey Fogle (4 Tds, 162 yds last week) and Nathan Rednowers. Fogle runs like he is shot out of a cannon and Rednowers is very , very tough to bring down and is like a runaway freight train in the open field. Fogle and Rednowesrs are both seniors as are most of the 2017 Cougars. The offensive line is big and experienced featuring 6'2" 252 lb. Will Bingman, 6'2" 278 lb. Ben Seis, 6'1" 255 lb Dennis Pittinger and 6'1" 236 lb Jack Kelly. The talents of the defensive backfield were on full display at Frederick a week ago and that squad is led by Sophomore Mason Clark, Rednowers, Christian Michael and Noah Shriner. Tough, hard nosed linebackers Logan Dinterman and Nick Reaver along with veterans Cam Baumgardner and Connor Smoak lead a defense that is hard to move against. The Cougars are quick out of the gate at 2-0 with road victories over Boonsboro and Frederick already. Catoctin is 1A this year which will make getting in the playoffs easier but Coach Williams would not talk about any of that. Catoctin has three home games in a row against Southern Garrett, Smithsburg and Williamsport and we'll know a lot more at the end of the homestand.
