Les copains d’abord – Chanson française

Part of Learn French with Pop Songs

“Buddies First” is a must-know song in French culture. It was very famous in the 60s and 70s. I was raised singing it.

Georges Brassens wrote it for a movie called “Les Copains”.

It’s an allegory that represents friendship.

That of a confident and solid ship that you can count on. This group of friends is very tight. They support each other. They steadily drift through life in spite of the storms that life throws at them.

Buddies first

No, she wasn’t like the Raft
From the Medusa, this boat
Let it be said down in the ports
Be said down in the ports
She was really chilled, bobbing
On the big blue pond
And she was called “Buddies First”
Buddies First

Her “Tossed but not sunk” motto,
That was no literature
No offense to spellcasters
To spellcasters
Her captain and sailors
Weren’t SOBs
But they were true buddies
Of the Gang

They weren’t shallow buddies
They were straight shooters, unlike Castor and Pollux
Unlike people from Sodom and Gomorrah
They weren’t decadent pervs
They weren’t buddies maybe chosen
By highbrows like Montaigne and La Boétie
On the belly, they slapped themselves hard [they had no class]
Buddies first

They were no angels, either
The Gospel? They had not read it
But they loved each other with all their shortcomings
They were very much accepting
Jean, Pierre, Paul and so on
That was their only litany [tune]
Their creed, their mea culpa
To Buddies first

At the slightest sign of trouble
Friendship would take the helm
It was friendship that kept their bearings
That kept them steady
And when they were in distress
That their arms threw cries for help
Buddies acted like semaphores
Buddies first

When the Gang met together
There weren’t many stood-ups
When one of them was missing on board
It’s because he was dead
Yes, but never, never ever
Was his hole in the water closed
One hundred years later, funny fate
He was still missing

I’ve traveled on many boats
But the only one that held out
That has never veered
[Ne]Ver veered
She was really chilled, bobbing
On the big blue pond
And she was called the “Buddies First”
Buddies First
