Nir Eyal is the bestselling author of "Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products" and "Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life."

He has taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. His writing on technology, psychology, and business appears in the Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, TechCrunch, and Psychology Today.

In a world of distraction, the ability to become indistractable offers us a serious competitive advantage.

Nir and I unpacked numerous topics on this show, including:

  1. Why our being so easily distracted goes deeper than our devices
  2. How toxic workplace cultures sacrifice our potential to do great work; and
  3. Nir’s four-step, research-backed model to become indistractable

With that, I bring you Nir Eyal.

Topics Discussed:

  • Why most distractions come from within
  • Why the ability to disconnect is the true scarce resource of the day
  • Internal triggers
  • External triggers
  • Variable rewards (a slot machine in our pockets)
  • Why time management is pain management
  • Evolutionary programming
  • How identify can influence behaviour
  • How do we re-imagine the internal trigger?
  • How to build new habits
  • The 10-minute rule
  • Traction v Distraction
  • Hacking back external triggers
  • Dysfunctional company cultures and productivity
  • What people can do to take back their time in the workplace
  • Making pacts
