Gay Pride Channel

As we wait for historic rulings to be handed down by the SCOTUS, this year’s Pride could potentially be one of the most significant in it’s 40 year history. While nobody expects them to wave a magic wand and make marriage equality the law of the land, most (including your humble host) are anticipating very narrow rulings in the three cases they are deciding that will have a significant impact on the unconstitutional laws against same-sex marriage that have been embedded into many state constitutions as well as federal law. Some key factors to look at are whether the California Prop 8 proponents (let’s just call them homophobic bigots) have standing to challenge that states reversal of the discriminatory law, which allowed the majority to vote on the rights of a minority. Without getting bogged down in the minutia, if they throw it back to Cali thus upholding marriage equality in that state, you can bet there will be multiple challenges in other states discriminatory laws. The other two cases deal more with the withholding of federal benefits, taxes, health care etc. for same sex partners that our straight counterparts enjoy. While they aren’t likely to flat out invalidate DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) they could find that denying a subset of the population these benefits is unconstitutional, thus paving way for a repeal of the law or further challenges that would ultimately do away with it once and for all. I am not a legal scholar nor do I pretend to be. I’m just trying to relay what’s going on in the best way that I understand it and hopefully in a way my followers can as well. All eyes will be on their ruling(s) in the coming weeks and I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Enough said! Now let’s get down to the business of the music.
