Petra Kolber, Author of The Perfection Detox + Fitness Expert — Glambition Radio Episode 150 with Ali Brown
Manage episode 216659294 series 63995
It was 1996. The Macarena was in full swing. Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalized their divorce. Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise debuted in theaters worldwide. And Reebok STEP was in full fitness force. I know because I was an instructor. And when I first moved to New York, I mailed a letter to this fantastic British woman I’d seen in the STEP videos. Her name was Petra Kolber. I wanted to see if—by some crazy chance—she’d be willing to have coffee with little ol’ Ali Brown, as I was considering teaching classes in the city. To my amazement, she responded with a YES, and… well, you have to hear the details in today’s #GlambitionRadio.
Because you see, we then pretty much forgot about each other. Then, fast forward to this past May, I received a lovely letter from a woman named Petra Kolber, saying she had a new book coming out and would love to be on my show. She didn’t realize I was the same Ali Brown. And I didn’t recognize her name at first. You have to hear the story! And now… here we are.
And I LOVE her new book: The Perfection Detox: Tame Your Inner Critic, Live Bravely, and Unleash Your Joy. If you’ve ever felt like you’re not enough or you’re not doing enough, you are going to love her message she shares on today’s show.
I have Petra walk us through how her career as an internationally renowned fitness expert (including being the global face and voice of Reebok) led to her having panic attacks and craving something more. This led to her writing The Perfection Detox — her 21-step process reveals how we can let go of perfectionism and gain our freedom back.
On the show, we also discuss:
* exactly what is standing in between you and your potential
*how to tell if perfectionism is hurting or helping you (it can do both)
*the importance of tuning in to the static between your heart and your head
*how the pitfalls of social media relate to our perfectionist tendencies (and how to curb them)
*how our heart can’t separate the difference between what we’re seeing ‘on screen’ and what we’re really going through in life (and what to do about it)
* the best bit of advice she received at the beginning of her career (it’s simple but SO true)
* details about Petra’s 10-year career as a fitness athlete, traveling around the world with Reebok
*Petra’s thoughts on the importance of the need for women entrepreneurs especially to detox from toxic perfectionism
Petra and I also discuss the importance of asking for help, why you shouldn’t take it personally if someone says no, and why you should stay humble, enjoy the ride, and serve your success forward.
