Text: Mark 3:7-12 ESV

7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea

8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him.

9 And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him,

10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him.

11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”

12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

-Mark 3:7-12 ESV

THE TRAP OF POPULARITY

Jesus was both powerful and wise through His teachings and miracles. He is becoming popular and His enemies were plotting to destroy Him. He could easily overpower them but He is also wise. His mission is to go to the cross.

As He withdrew to the seaside, a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon. These people were attracted to the fame of Jesus – He healed the sick and performed miracles. This mob pressed around to touch Him. Those with unclean spirits saw him, fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”

His popularity is beyond question among the people. But, Jesus warned them strictly not to make Him known. Why? The demon's apparent compulsion to declare Jesus as the Son of God works against God's plans. Satan is the father of lies[John 8:44] Jesus has His eyes fixated to the cross. Let’s learn the lesson that could side-track us from doing His will. Popularity isn’t necessarily the measure of success. Doing His will is the only thing that matters.
