God’s Word for Today 29 May, 2024 28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” -Mark 3:28-30 ESV THE UNPARDONABLE SIN Apparently, the miracle Jesus did was clearly from God. Yet, the scribes ascribed it to Satan. Their claim is ridiculous, in fact blasphemous. Jesus said that all sins are forgiven except for one – the blasphemy against the Spirit. Jesus said, “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.” What, exactly, this sin is? Some say it is attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan. This includes the fear of criticizing any church or ministry. Others say that Jesus' warning only applies to people who personally watched Him perform miracles under the power of the Holy Spirit. Many insist that today, the unforgivable sin is rejecting Jesus' sacrifice (Heb 11:6). All of the above are valid. The scribes had made up their minds already. Their minds are locked up. They have rejected the work of the Holy Spirit to convict (John 16:7–11), counsel (John 14:16), guide (John 16:13), witness (1 Cor 12:3), and sanctify (Gal 5:22–23). They saw it clearly but put it as from Satan. What does this mean for us today? Today, to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit is to reject His work, particularly His work to convince us about who Jesus is (John 15:26). It is to reject or ‘harden one’s heart’s work throughout one's entire lifetime. No confession, repentance and belief in Jesus would happen. A steady rejection of the convicting and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit throughout an entire lifetime. Those who persist in that rejection will not be forgiven.
