Anna Ahkmatova was a romantic, a patriot, a poet. She was a bohemian during the Silver Age of art in Russia, just before the first World War. At first, she wrote the romantic poems that lovebirds carried with them in purses and pockets. Soon, though, her writing and her career, which began with a bang in the smoky cabarets of St. Petersburg, tumbled through a revolution and two world wars, becoming a product of its time. Anna, her reputation, and her poetry did not come out unscathed. Despite all of her trials and tribulations, when she passed she was considered one of Russia's most celebrated poets of the 20th century.

Episode 71 (masquerading as 72), witches! Today, @hannahfergesen and @msdeannaelise talk about the life and times of Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne! She lived during the English Reformation and Restoration, and was known as a shy, kooky philosopher. Fact is, she just might well be responsible for the creation of sci-fi as we know it today! She wrote a wild novella about a woman whisked off to another dimension in which airships take to the skies, while humans and animals exist in harmony under the rule of a benevolent empress. She was a deeply curious woman who devoted her life to writing, philosophy, and science. A good witch to marched to the beat of her own drum. • • #goodwitchesbadbitches #gwbb #gwbbpodcast #podcast #womenwhopodcast #feminist #feminism #writer #womenwhowrite #philosophy #philosopher #english #margaretcavendish #history #herstory #wcw #witchywednesday Episode 72, witches! (Okay, it’s actually 71 but this badass went around the world in 72 days so we honor her! 😎) Today, @msdeannaelise and @hannahfergesen discuss the incredible life of journalist Nellie Bly. This fearless, tenacious, feisty, tireless crusader basically invented undercover investigative journalism. One of her most famous exposés, penned when she was a seasoned reporter at the ripe age of 23 (!), was “Ten Days in a Madhouse”. She pretended to be mentally ill and was placed into Blackwell’s Island asylum (believe us, it’s wild how easy it was for her to get in), where she witnessed horrifying conditions and treatment of patients. She dropped her act after two days in the facility, and they treated her with even more suspicion... She also trekked around the world in 72 days in honor of Phineas Fogg’s fictitious journey in Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days”! There’s so much more to be said, but why don’t you just hop on over to where you get your podcasts and find out for yourself! • • #goodwitchesbadbitches #gwbbpodcast #podcast #womenwhopodcast #feminist #feminism #womeninjournalism #journalism #reporter #american #nelliebly #investigator #asylum #badasswomen #bossbabe Episode 69, witches! Get your weekly dose of ladies with @msdeannaelise and @hannahfergesen as they tell you about the cruel and terrifying Dr. Linda Hazzard — a “starvation” specialist, based in the Pacific Northwest, who preached that the root of all human ailment was rooted in eating in excess. Her “miracle treatment” consisted of eating no more than tomato broth in very small amounts, and infrequently a tablespoon of orange juice daily, with hours-long enemas every day, and “massages” of the belly that were much more like beatings. Patients would check in to her facility and stay for months. Emaciated and delirious, she coaxed the most wealthy of those she treated to sign over their money and property for her “safekeeping”, and many patients starved to death. She also had those who swore she saved their lives. Did she really believe what she sold? It’s hard to say... but she was one serious piece of work. Her books can still be found today in alternative medicine shops, terrifyingly enough. Learn all about her — wherever you get your podcasts! • • #goodwitchesbadbitches #gwbbpodcast #gwbb #podcast #womenwhopodcast #feminist #feminism #history #alternativemedicine #fasting #american #history #herstory #lindahazzard #pacificnorthwest If you can believe it, the Countess de Castiglione, a 19th century Italian Countess who became a Parisian socialite after an affair with Napoleon himself, sat for hundreds of portraits at a time when photography was still quite rare. She spent all her money on elaborate costumes and art-directed her own photos with a local photographer, producing beautiful images and hundreds of early precursors to what we’d probably call selfies now. She was dramatic, narcissistic, and selfish - but her portraits remain a testament to her outlandish creative spirit at a time when this kind of thing was simply not done.
