When you think of the origins of Rock n'Roll, chances are names like Elvis Presley and Chuck Barry come to mind. But more than a decade before, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was pioneering the new sound and creating unique hits that went on to influence all of the male "inventors" and "godfathers" of Rock n' Roll. She was a Black, openly bisexual woman whose gospel background provided the foundation for what we now think of as Rock n' Roll. She was a good witch who paved the way for a new sound that changed music as we knew it.

INTRO - 14:40 | Hannah shares an article revealing a secret scandal revolving the British Royal Family.

Episode 59, witches! Today, @hannahfergesen and @msdeannaelise discuss the incredible and often frustrating life & career of Hollywood’s first bonafide Chinese American star: the mesmerizing Anna May Wong! A 3rd generation American born and raised in Los Angeles, she was ready to perform at an early age — and even got her first job in an Alla Nazimova (of episode 18!) film. Sadly, she was consistently pigeonholed into playing stereotypical roles that lacked full dimension, and would often be passed over for Asian leads when the male lead was whitewashed (the Hays Code wouldn’t allow it SIGH). She travelled the globe in search of roles that satisfied her, and was adored in both Europe and China (though initially China found her to be “too American”!). This trailblazer was the first Asian American actress to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (the second was JUST given to Lucy Liu this month!). We absolutely adore her — hear more about her, wherever you get your podcasts! • • #goodwitches #badbitches #gwbb #podcast #womenwhopodcast #feminist #feminism #history #herstory #hollywood #oldhollywood #actor #actress #chineseamerican #annamaywong #asian #asianamerican #asianpacificamericanheritagemonth #wcw #witchywednesday #goldenageofhollywood Hey #gwbbpodcast Patrons! Today, to kick off Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, @msdeannaelise and @hannahfergesen discuss the prolific and lasting work done by the first woman of color elected to US Congress: Patsy Takemoto Mink! This amazing and tenacious woman was denied entry to medical school because she was a woman, and this set her on a whole new path — going into law (and subsequently politics) to do her part to end discrimination against women and people of color so that future generations would be able to pursue their dreams. She never had an issue being a standalone, courageous, dissenting voice — knowing that someone had to be the first to speak out on issues that matter. We stan a true legend! • • #goodwitches #badbitches #gwbb #podcast #gwbbpodcast #womenwhopodcast #feminism #feminist #ushistory #history #herstory #asianamericanpacificislanderheritagemonth #asian #asianamerican #politics #hawaii #patsymink #patsytakemotomink #japaneseamerican #congresswoman #wcw #witchywednesday
