Episode 57, witches! Brace yourselves today, for @hannahfergesen and @msdeannaelise take you through the long and VERY productive life of the loud, fiery, and singular Marjory Stoneman Douglas. She was a writer and a journalist by trade and found herself becoming an accidental conservationist when she realized that the unique and precious ecosystem of the Florida Everglades was at risk of being destroyed, and that she needed to do something about it. Her voice was a significant one and she spent the whole rest of her life (she lived to be 108!!!) using it — writing about and working towards the prolonged protection of the delicate ecosystem that she cared so deeply for. What an amazing good witch she was! • • #goodwitches #badbitches #gwbb #podcast #womenwhoppdcast #feminist #feminism #history #herstory #american #bossbabe #suffragette #conservation #conservationist #wcw #witchywednesday #marjorystonemandouglas #msd #florida #everglades #evergladesnationalpark #saveourplanet You guys! It’s the birthday of our darling dear bad bitch @hannahfergesen today! She’s the best podcast cohost and chosen family I could ask for. She is feisty, funny, easy to be around, and always makes fun of me in ways that I surely deserve. This photo of us is, amazingly, one of the few that exist online and is from THIRTEEN years ago (wow, we’ve been friends a long time...). I love her so much, and I know you guys do, too! Wish her a happy birthday and be witchy today in her honor!! 🤘🏼🎉🌿🌖 #gwbb #happybirthday #womenwhopodcast Episode 56, witches! Today, @msdeannaelise and @hannahfergesen want to preach to you on high about the woman who invented rock and roll: Sister Rosetta Tharpe! What’s that? Didn’t know a prodigious Southern, black, queer gospel artist did this? Probably because she nearly got erased by history. She recorded songs that have recognizable rock vibes back in the 1930s — and SHE inspired the likes of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard (many of whom are credited as the “fathers” of rock and were in diapers in her day). She was a HUGE star (her third wedding was held in a stadium in DC and attended by 25,000 people!), and it’s absolutely insane that she was only inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 — especially when her specific style of playing the electric guitar can be heard in nearly all modern rock music. She was a fierce badass and you REALLY want to know her story! Today, @hannahfergesen and @msdeannaelise discuss the life of the absolutely incredible, truly goodliest of witches Juliette Gordon Low. She was born in Savannah before the Civil War ended to a cotton broker father and an abolitionist mother (what!?), and raised with the education and graces of a genteel lady. But! She was highly accident prone (did you know she was mostly deaf because of accidents?) and had a notoriously silly personality (her nickname was Crazy Daisy). She also developed many handy talents and believed it was important for all ladies to learn skills outside of ones that were “reserved for women”. This extremely open-hearted and good-natured woman would go on to found the Girl Guides (@girlguiding) in the UK, and then the Girl Scouts (@girlscouts) in the US — both organizations still striving today towards educating and empowering girls of all colors and creeds. We love her. Learn all about her now — wherever you get your podcasts! • • #goodwitches #badbitches #gwbb #womenwhopodcast #podcast #feminist #feminism #history #herstory #girlscouts #girlguides #american #southern #juliettegordonlow #wcw #witchywednesday #girlscoutsofamerica #bossbabe #inspiration
