Stephen, one of the first Deacons (Acts 6:1-5) is being falsely accused of blasphemy because of his proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. As he is about to be stoned, he looks toward heaven and sees Jesus standing at the right hand of God the Father. Today is Ascension Sunday when we remember Christ’s ascension to God’s right hand. What does that mean? It means that God has fulfilled a divine plan from before creation in which God sacrifices part of his power to create a world and Jesus comes as the ultimate sacrifice to restore and recreate the world. Jesus’ position of power at God’s right hand assures us of his victory over doubt, despair, sorrow, sin, death and Satan. Stephen, seeing this unconquerable vision, is empowered to forgive his murderers. This includes Saul of Tarsus who will become Paul the apostle. (Text: Acts 7:54-60)
