The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) covers minimum wage standards that are so complicated, you need a flowchart to track them.

This is one of the things I learned from my recent podcast with Sandy Krauer, director of HR services with Total Focus HR Solutions.

Some things to remember:

  • There is a federal minimum hourly wage -- $7.25/hour was established in 2009 and hasn't changed since then
  • Each state can set its own minimum hourly rate -- it can be higher or the same
  • Counties can establish their own minimum rates
  • Some states have laws that make allowances based on the number of employees
