#35 Camille Couch and Andrew Roberts (Co-Owners): Helping Oneself, to Lose Oneself in Service to Others.

Coming from Fredericksburg, Virginia, at their mental health clinic and practice with themselves and 10 other
counselors, Camille and Andrew share with us the balance they find within themselves and their business partnership to
bring about their ultimate life goal of helping and serving others. This episode is sweetened and condensed into a little
power-packed ball of goodness. We get a glimpse into their background and lives and how they work together to scale
up their business by working smarter, not necessarily working more.
More information about their practice, Riverside Counseling, is right here.
2:00… After a nice introduction, we first hear from Camille as she tells us what they are doing together. With a
background in cooperate training, she feels the strong desire to go beyond the normal look and procedures of
yesterday’s mental health practices. They have a vision for today. They ask, what do our clients really need? As they
continue to move forward, staying focused on those needs, they can create more groups, retreats, and more to meet
those needs.
3:00… We jump into Andrew’s life. Mental health hasn’t always been his career, however it has been his passion. After 5
years working (some may say playing!) as a full-time bass pro-fisherman and hunting guide, he decided it was time to
settle down and be present in his family life. He went back to graduate school and earned his degree to be a counselor.
He has worked in groups dealing with several addictions, including alcohol and substance abuse. Andrew has worked
with all sorts of clientele.
5:15… Diving a little further into Andrew’s life, we learn that it’s not always been so balanced as it is today. He had a lot
of work to do! He was emotionally spent. Taking a step back and setting some boundaries were exactly what he knew he
had to do. It was a big learning curve, but Andrew discovered working on himself and focusing on his family, first,
enabled him to be more productive. He shares with us, “When I’m rested, I’m in the right place.” Great words we can all
learn from!
8:50… So how did this working relationship develop? And what’s important here? Camille describes it as the best
arranged business marriage! She wouldn’t trade this working relationship for anything. They balance each other out.
And that is key in a successful business partnership. They feel they have no major problems. Sharing the same morals
and ethics are a must. Being kind to clients, employees and the other counselors comes first. They each bring different
things to the table, they respect each other’s points of view and can make big decisions together. All crucial in business
success.
12:45… When asked how do you have crucial conversations together? Andrew and Camille share the mutual idea of
immediacy. Don’t wait. If there’s an issue, they talk directly to each other, get clarification and move on. Their intent is
always good. This is a partnership where trust, respect and understanding all go hand in hand. “When leveraging
disagreement and different perspectives, it’s a good opportunity for growth.” They don’t take anything too serious…
they still make room to laugh.
17:45… Productivity. For a moment, the discussion flows into how they plan there lives so that they grow individually.
How is this helping me grow as a person? Dr. Drew reminds us that in our weekly planning with ourselves we ask these
questions… What did I learn from last week? What did I enjoy from last week? So that we can reflect on how we are
growing as human beings. This, in turns, allows more productivity to take place. Exactly what both Camille and Andrew
have become so successful at because they plan and ask themselves these types of questions.
18:45…In finishing up, Andrew and Camille answer Dr. Drew’s question of what is your #1 mindset… for balance in a
healthy life and business? Camille takes the wheel first and she shares how she believes that she’s been given one more
day to live and what it is that she’s going to do with that. Service to others. “When the inside is good, the outside is
good.” She gives of herself to make a difference and to give back to the world. A good reminder for all of us, she says,
“To know oneself, is to lose oneself.”

20:55… Andrew continues with that same mindset. Helping others to grow is his goal, as is the vision they share in their
business. How does he do that? He has an open mind, lives one day at a time, sets clear boundaries… asking what comes
first?, and lives in a selfless manner all while making time to care for himself and his family.
An incredible example of balancing life and business is set by Camille and Andrew. We have so much to gain from this
example of selflessness because of balancing oneself.
