Ze zat voor de PvdA in de Eerste Kamer en het Europees parlement, was begin jaren tachtig staatssecretaris voor Sociale Zaken en eind jaren tachtig opnieuw minister in het eerste Paarse kabinet.
Haar betrokkenheid beperkte zich niet tot een rol in het openbaar bestuur. Ze zette zich in voor de vrouwenbeweging, voor het recht op eigen leven en dood, voor een Ander Joods geluid.
Jeroen van Kan vraagt Hedy d’Ancona naar haar gedrevenheid om op al die terreinen actief te zijn vandaan en wat ze heeft bereikt.
