Episode 10

Rob Adams: converting love stories into wedding films

I took a few weeks off (something I’m not proud of), but this podcast might just make up for the absence. I had the pleasure of speaking with the talented Rob Adams from www.robadamsfilms.com and he shared a ton of great tips and ideas on hiring a professional wedding videographer/cinematographer. Rob Adams Films, based in NJ, has been creating wedding videos/films since 1999. His job? Converting love stories into wedding films. Rob Adams Films is also married to professional NJ Wedding photographer Vanessa Joy who I had the pleasure of interviewing as well (listen here). Podcast Highlights

Is video necessary?

Video is one of the most underestimated aspects of a wedding. The stigma of old traditional-cheesy style wedding video is still on but what video has become now in terms of wedding is really moving photography. The type of production we are doing now, would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a few years ago.

Videographers and Photographers:

Now a days our work is more a collaborative effort. Is important to be on the same page in terms of style and creativity. i.e.: Hiring a traditional videographer and a progressive-young photographer – their techniques are going to be so different, that they are going to be on each other’s way and nerves.

Who defines de style?

“My style and films are mine, and while they are different on every story, the videos themselves are pretty much the same format”. Hire a professional who has the style you want. – In terms of music, I want to give my editors space for as much creativity as possible, and limiting them to an specific song might kill creativity.

Tip: Do tell when a specific part of the event is very important. i.e.: “I really want you to focus on the party”; “I want you to focus on my cousins that are visiting from Italy”, “I really don’t like this bridesmaid, so don’t focus so much on her”

You can’t afford it?

Professionals like Rob can cover the day at a discounted rate. This doesn’t include the editing, but you’ll have your day professionally filmed. Later, after those envelopes you receive at the wedding, or when you recover from the expenses, you can talk about editing.– But you can’t edit a bad-covered day.

Marriage advice: Communication is a key factor and just true mutual respect.

We also talked about First Looks, Trash The Dress sessions, Should you feed your vendors? And More! – Make sure to listen!
