While some naturally occuring tryptamines are neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin, melatonin and bufotenin), most are psychoactive hallucinogens found in plants, fungi and animals.
Some you may know of include DMT, LSD, and Psilocybin. In the human gut, symbiotic bacteria convert dietary tryptophan to tryptamine, which lays the basis for endogenously occurring psychedelics, produced by your own body. What is the reason or purpose behind this?
