Love in the Time of Liberalism with Harvey Kaye
Manage episode 254721198 series 2514433
We need to take hold of our radical history and make America radical once again. Generations past call on us to do so.
Our own historical longings urge us to do so. And Americans yet to come await our determination in doing so.
As the Progressive journalist Henry Demarest Lloyd put it more than a century ago: “The price of liberty is something more than eternal vigilance. There must also be eternal advance. We can save the rights we have inherited from our fathers only by winning new ones to bequeath our children.”
Today, Harvey Kaye from the the University of Wisconsin in Greenbay joins us to talk about the forgotten American labour and socialist movement and why we need to resurrect it.
Forgotten Visuals
Mayday parade in New York City in 1932
Leader of the Milwaukee Socialist Movement in the 1910s
The Socialist platform in Milwaukee in 1916
