Há 170 anos atrás, durante o Brasil Império, ocorreu a inauguração do primeiro trecho ferroviário do Brasil.

O trecho inaugurado tinha 14 km e pretendia ligar o porto de Mauá, em Magé, a Petrópolis, na região serrana do Rio de Janeiro. No auge das ferrovias no Brasil, chegamos a ter 38 mil km de vias.
