This week's guest, Katy epitomizes the idea that Triathlon can help you discover who you truly are & that dreaming big can create both - crushing disappointments but also amazing successes & personal breakthroughs. When Katy sets a goal, she usually sets a big one, so when at age 30 she was dealing with depression following divorce, what did she do but sign up for an Ironman! But there was a bit of a hitch in this plan, something that most of us have just not had to deal with. It was during this period of training that she realized that she'd been living a lie & that she's a transgender woman. Coming out as transgender & beginning the process of transition brought with it a host of complications & challenges - physical, emotional, mental & also, societal. And her Triathlon goals fell to the side as she once again felt herself struggling. Throughout this time her relationship with her daughter was a shining light & a great source of strength & support. Wanting to be a good role model for her, this eventually led her back to our world of Triathlon. Katy has now completed 3 70.3s & up-to 100km trail runs & now is eyeing her first IM before she then moves on to the even longer distances.
