I Want to Believe the Podcast – S4 Bonus Episode | Mary Ellen Pleasant: The Lost Episode

Music snippet at the top of the episode: Mary, Mary by Run D.M.C.

Music at the bottom of the episode: Ladies First by Queen Latifah featuring Monie Love

Welcome to the I Want to Believe podcast! Last year, as I was researching, recording, and editing season 4 of this podcast, I tend to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop... during one of those transfers, I lost a whole bunch of files that I was working on, including this episode. After a while, I assumed that I had accidentally deleted the episode. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, while searching through some folders unrelated to the podcast... I FOUND THE EPISODE! I probably accidentally pasted it into a folder.. I'm kind of a dummy, haha.

So now, I am proud to present, the lost episode of Mary Ellen Pleasant.

Many have called her the Mother of Human Rights, but others will try to convince us of something more sinister. I’ll tell you about Mrs. Pleasant in a second…

Before we get to the episode, a quick reminder that ALL of our I Want to Believe social media & email links are below. My brand new book of horror fiction, "We Only Come Out At Night" is NOW AVAILABLE for PRE-ORDER! Visit the online store at Slevikstore.Company.Site The first 50 copies come with 2 free stickers and a bookmark. All copies will be signed.

A New York Times posthumous obituary byline states that Mary Ellen Pleasant was born into slavery, that she became a Gold Rush-era millionaire and a powerful abolitionist. While some claim that her life seems to have been shrouded in a bit of mystery, she certainly was a successful 19th-century American entrepreneur. It is estimated that she was born around 1814, some say on a Georgia plantation while her autobiography states, insists actually, that she had been born in Philadelphia. Sacramento writer Susheel Bibbs wrote, “Her life is so enshrouded in mystery because she was her own spin doctor. Pleasant wrote three autobiographies -- but each one contradicts the other on basic facts, such as the year of her birth.”
