Kyodo:S. Korea not to nix “comfort women” deal, seeks more from Japan

South Korea announced Tuesday it will not seek to renegotiate the two-year-old deal with Japan on “comfort women” forced to work in Japanese wartime military brothels, but wants Tokyo to do more for the victims.

In formulating the new policy, South Korea placed emphasis … in addition to the restoration of honor and dignity of the victims, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung Wha said in a press briefing in Seoul.

She stressed what the victims really want is a “voluntary and genuine apology.”

Of the 47 former comfort women who were still alive when the 2015 agreement was reached, 36 or their bereaved families have received or indicated their intent to receive money from the foundation.

NYT:Losing Faith in the State, Some Mexican Towns Quietly Break Away

TANCÍTARO, Mexico — The road to this agricultural town winds through the slums and cartel-controlled territory of Michoacán, ground zero for Mexico’s drug war, before arriving at a sight so strange it can seem like a mirage.
Fifteen-foot stone turrets are staffed by men whose green uniforms belong to no official force. Beyond them, a statue of an avocado bears the inscription “avocado capital of the world.” And beyond the statue is Tancítaro, an island of safety and stability amid the most violent period in Mexico’s history.
Local orchard owners, who export over $1 million in avocados per day, mostly to the United States, underwrite what has effectively become an independent city-state. Self-policing and self-governing, it is a sanctuary from drug cartels as well as from the Mexican state.
But beneath the calm is a town under tightfisted control, enforced by militias accountable only to their paymasters. Drug addiction and suicide are soaring, locals say, as the social contract strains.

RT:France’s Macron on Chinese charm offensive with trade imbalance, African security on table

On Monday, the French president arrived in the northeastern Chinese city of Xi’an – the capital of the 7th century Tang Dynasty, and the end-point of the historic Silk Road. The choice of destination was an apparent bow to Chinese President’s Xi Jinping’s ambitious “One Belt, One Road” infrastructure project, which is touted in Beijing as a modern counterpart to the ancient Europe-Asia trade route.

Portals of London:Under river, outside time: The Woolwich Foot Tunnel Anomaly

Mention the 18 month time frame to someone who worked on the Woolwich Tunnel job and you may be met with a mysterious smile. A year and a half may have seemed a long time to those who relied on the tunnel for their daily commute. But for those who were down there beneath the river, that time-frame has a different meaning. When one contractor tells me he aged 3 years on the Woolwich job, it is not a metaphor. For, deep down beneath river and clay, hidden from those above ground, something was occurring. That something was a time anomaly.

Interesting read, handful of salt, ok?

The Wrap:Roseanne Barr Says Her TV Character Supports Trump: ‘It’s Just Realistic’

“I’ve always attempted to portray a realistic portrait of the American people and the working class people. And, in fact, it was working class people who elected Trump,” Barr continued. “So I felt like, yeah, that was very real, and something that needed to be discussed.”

“It’s always a lesser of two evils,” Barr continued, added that one reason she “could not vote for Hillary Clinton is because of Haiti.”

She was cut off before she could explain what she meant.

After Apple admitted that it intentionally slowed down older models of its iPhones over time

Paris prosecutors have launched a probe of US tech giant Apple over suspected “planned obsolescence” in some of its iPhone models, a judicial source told AFP on Monday.
