I always enjoy talking to my friend, Bettina Bennett, CEO of Whichbox Media. Her company is fascinating. It s an Audience Engagement Platform, meaning it s an online suite of user generated content tools, community content management, and gamification tools. Her company got funding from TechWildcatters – a top incubator in the country. We ll discuss more about her company and what she does, but what is more fascinating is her life and her journey for how she got to where she is now.

While an Ambassador at the Dallas Entrepreneur Center, we had an assignment to learn about the life of a CEO. We chose to work with Bettina. Although I was friends with her already, I had no idea of the life she led before her current career. It was fascinating! She embodies what it means to have a fluid career.

In the discussion with Bettina, we’ll discuss:

  • Her journey and the shifts
  • The careers she had – from fashion to legal to content
  • The places where she worked
  • How she knew it was time to make a next step – and what that step was
  • What inspired her to be an entrepreneur
  • Her views on the fluid career and how it s relevant today
  • Career advice for anyone out there looking for something new or to make a change

What s a fluid career?

Dana Theus has been observing a new career trend fluid careers. The average tenure of a job for professionals is 3.5 years. This means that someone could have up to 10-12 jobs in a lifetime and possibly 2-3+ careers. It is freeing, in that it gives people more control to design more work-life balance in their career over time, and anxiety-producing as it can feel less stable if one defines success as a job that lasts at least 10 years. This fluid employment trend takes into account the growth in both entrepreneurship and the Gig Economy, reductions in employee tenure, increases in employee dissatisfaction and increases in employee turnover.

Born in Germany, Bettina has been a change agent her entire career and a constant creator of “firsts”.

Since founding her first venture, Media Rights Management, in 1988, Bettina has proven her business acumen over time as an innovative entrepreneur and international entertainment consultant, a convergence maverick, a social media, cross platform marketing expert, and a visionary in the realm of media and content monetization.

With a background in law and literature, Bettina began her career at one of Germany s most prominent publishing houses, creating the first media department at any European publishing company.

When she launched her first company, Media Rights Management, it rapidly became the expert source for procuring funding for international entertainment projects, development of new content distribution and syndication models, and arrangement of the first ever entertainment industry joint ventures between European and US media companies. Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Mipcom magazine and other media have described her projects as: major, groundbreaking , the biggest and quintessential international coproduction deals and notable , and referred to Bettina as a new breed of international media projects co-ordinators , and one of a kind.

Foreseeing the developments in digital media and the social media space, Bettina then parlayed her efforts into launching WhichBox Media, and developing whichbox®, a new technology platform, with a focus on interactive, multi media storytelling, community and content. With it’s patented technology, whichbox® is another first: the only all-in-one interactive storytelling platform, that brings together social networking and community technology, with user generated content tools, community content management, and gamification.

Bettina Bennett was honored by the DBJ in 2014 as one of the Top Women in Technology in North Texas.
