For today s episode, we ll be talking to Mary Brodie. She organizes the InPower Coffee Break weekly podcast. She s now pursuing a Master s in Corporate Communication virtually, part-time and working her business with her clients. Before she continues her to focus more time to school, we were going to have a conversation with her about her fluid career.
At first glance of her LinkedIn profile or resume, her career may seem disjointed and spread in multiple directions – technology, writing, marketing, consulting, entrepreneurship. However, when it comes to creating customer experiences using technology, it’s completely logical. Mary can t say she exactly planned her career this way, but she followed her passions and made decisions that made sense at the time to get her where she is today.
She started her career in customer support. Her first experience creating experiences was creating guidelines, or etiquette, as the team called it, for the team to be more available for calls. She worked with the team to create the document and measured its success through the results and caller experiences.
She then created and managed Web sites for a number of years, designing the user experience (UX) and working with team members to determine how it should work and be built. In the process, she has learned about a number of industries from health insurance to travel to IT. Now, her interests lie in AI/chatbots and content creation – from her perspective, in the near future there will be few touch experiences as we have today with mobile. She s also interested in the bigger picture of UX/CX and journeys – the customer relationship. According to Mary, memorable experiences build great customer relationships.
About Mary Brodie
Mary creates customer and user experiences using different types of technology – from apps to Web to phones. Her company, Gearmark, focuses on building customer relationships through these experiences in content, apps, social media, and more. With the rise of mobile and sensors, she has been noticing that the focus of experiences is shifting from tapping and clicking to communication – content, speech, bots.
As an entrepreneur, she has a passion for startups. She founded her own business and has collaborated with others to start a few. She is also a writer. Her interests span from how people experience technology and communicate with each other online and offline to women, leadership, and entrepreneurship. When she’s not designing, writing, or working on a business, she’s either at the gym, at her home studio belly dancing (was formerly a professional belly dancer), or in her kitchen cooking. Her personal motto comes from Yoda: “Do or do not, there is no try!”
