Are you confident enough to be yourself? Would a snarky comment from a stranger eat away at your self-confidence? Would their words cause you to conform to their idea of what is the norm? Or would you hold your head high and carry on regardless? Everyone likes to believe they are an individual and living life their way. But is that true? Whose life are you living? I was reminded how powerful a stranger's words can be and the effect they have; even for people they do not know. Hearing them say an unkind word can have a negative impact on your desire to be you. Shamed By A Stranger The last time I remember following fashion, Duran Duran were number one on Top Of The Pops, and the RaRa skirt was the best thing since sliced bread. Since then I have re-discovered my style; the 1940s & 50s fashion. A red polka-dot circle skirt and a petticoat to give the skirt some omph was a dream of mine. The first chance I would get to buy one, I would. And I did. I now have five circle skirts, seven petticoats and counting. One bright sunny day a lady and her daughter who spotted me wearing a teal 50s dress stopped me in the street. It had a gingham collar and belt to match. She told me the tale of how a stranger had shamed her into never wearing vintage clothes in public again. Although they made her feel beautiful and feminine, she now felt too self-conscious. A Memory I encouraged her to wear the vintage clothes again. Then memories of moments when I had allowed comments to de-rail me flooded my mind. Picky statements from "friends" and strangers put me off being myself. I remembered how easy it is to conform and hide than be true to ourselves and stand in our power. Our power and strength come from knowing ourselves better. Inner strength comes from being proud to be who we are, and it is then that no-one can take our identity from us. It is then that we refuse to mould character and style to make others feel comfortable, It does take courage and a certain boldness not to conform. But ask yourself this; on your deathbed, will you be glad you became someone else, or will you be proud that you stood up for you? Not sure? What advice would you give your younger self?
