Podcast Transcript Have you ever mentioned your goals and ideas to a friend or family member, only to find not only do they doubt the plan but they doubt your ability to achieve and execute it? My name is Wendy Taylor-Loftus, and I am your host, and today I’m going to talk about how to deal with that situation, here on the CWA Today’s show is called; Walking In Your Shoes. When you want to take a certain path and friends or family think it’s a foolish idea or brush it off as a fad, it can be a real challenge to stand your ground and know it is for sure it is what you want to do. Because they make stupid suggestions to dumb down your idea way below the level of it being challenging. They’ll make suggestions like, are you going to hand out leaflets? Because you know full well if your business is online and the clients you're reaching are way overseas, leaflets are not gonna cut it. When someone does not understand your journey, it is frustrating, but you know what? It's okay, because your path is not for them. That's the thing we often have to remind ourselves, that even though someone doesn’t understand where we are going or are headed, that's okay because that's not their journey it's yours. They are at a different stage in their life from you. They may not be at your level or reaching as high as you. The life journey you are on at the moment is your journey. And it is so exciting sometimes when you want to share that with people, but they just don't get it. But like I said, that's okay. Most people will not understand it because they are on another path and sometimes we often forget that. We want other people to feel our passion, and excitement and enthusiasm for something but we forget this isn't their journey. This isn't their vision, their goal; it didn't come to them. But you know what, it's okay to feel that frustration. People just don't get it. Some people look at you like you’re nuts, and they’ll think your idea is either cute, stupid or simply change the subject altogether. But you know what ladies? That's okay. Because I'm going to give you some suggestions on how to deal with it and actually how to protect yourself when you have an idea. Because when you're excited, there is also nerves and everything else thrown into the mix and the last thing you need is for someone to come along and tell you-you can't do it. So, First of all, consider the person you are about to talk to. Are they on your level? Is the person you’re about to discuss your idea with on the same level as you or higher? Ideally, you want someone a bit further along the road than you. Someone who can give you good advice. Someone that can help you. Are they entrepreneurial or do they have simple aspirations like yearly holidays? There's nothing wrong with aspiring just to have a good holiday once a year. But if you are entrepreneurial, if there is a goal or an ambition you want to reach, speaking to someone who just wants to aspire to a holiday once a year, and you want really good feedback, you're not really going to get it. You're just setting yourself up for a fall. Talking to someone who has no interest in business can set you up for a disappointing conversation. And there is nothing worse than having that energy, that excitement and you're looking forward to the whole thing, and that person just doesn't get it. It is hard just to get past that. So when you're going to talk to somebody about what you want to do, remember they're not walking in your shoes, they can’t understand what you're aiming for. But importantly, consider the person you're about to talk to. You really need to think and not allow that excitement to get ahead of you because the conversation will be disappointing. You know, I've been there when I've talked to somebody about what I want to do, my idea and I'm excited. And the next thing I know they just look at me like I am crazy and remind me of the things I have done in the past th...
