Karen had a hemorrhagic stroke at age 37. It was her then fiancé Michael’s thinking FAST—recognizing the signs of a stroke--that saved her life. After the stroke, Karen was not able to feel her left side. She knew it was up to her to reclaim her life. She started by relearning how to walk, with the goal of walking down the aisle at her wedding with Michael four months later. She continues to thrive, having completed a half marathon and Seattle’s Big Climb—a 69 flight trek to the top of the tallest building west of the Mississippi. Karen gives back to the community by volunteering with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. She also founded Reclaiming Ourselves, an online young adult stroke support group.
