IFNYC 004: Private Sales – Shooting a Series with a One Person Crew

Subscribe to The Indie Film NYC Podcast.

On this episode of the podcast I’m talking with Sean & Taylor King – a father son team who produced a dramatic web series called Private Sales.

Last week we spoke with filmmaker Michael Fileld from Connecticut who got into the WGA based on the work he did in a web series. Like many filmmakers producing web series, a lot of his work is based in the comedy world. And I’d like to remind anyone going to the ITVFest in Dover, VT this October, to check out his latest show, Life ends at 30.

Sean and Taylor have also made a foray into the world of independent web series, but they did so with a dramatic series that you might find on a premium cable channel like HBO or Showtime. Just read the show’s description;

When Jacob Hunter’s [played by Taylor King] wealthy parents are murdered, he returns from college to mourn and take care of the estate. With his inheritance tied up in probate, Jacob takes a job driving high price escorts. As he searches for his parents killer, Jacob is sucked into the hidden world of sex workers and their clients.

The model Sean and Taylor built their series on is so fascinating and if you pay attention to the details in the interview, they impart some really great advice both on the practical end of shooting the series, as well as advice on how to write a series that can keep viewers engaged.

The thing that really caught my attention was that this show was shot with a one-man crew. The claim was hard to believe, especially if you see the quality of the show, but once I really dove into what they did and how they did it, I just knew that there were filmmakers out there who would benefit from learning the process these two employed to get their series done.

What’s even better, is that the production methods that they utilized and the equipment they used will translate into any type of independent filmmaking. So, whether you’re shooting your own web series, or you want to make a feature, a short or any other type of narrative project, you should get some really great insight in this episode.

One more thing I want to say about web series is that it seems really difficult to cut through the noise to make a successful web series that gets the filmmakers any type of attention. Both Michael and I are torn on our thoughts about whether or not emerging filmmakers should put the energy into a web series.

From this discussion, we have decided to explore the pros and cons of producing a web series. We will most likely explore this through a series of blog posts. I’m also going to put some time into researching what web series were successful and why, and bring that information to you so that you can decide for yourselves if you want to go down the path of a web series. But if you do, I hope that the information we provide will help you make informed decisions about your project and put you in the best position for success, so keep an eye out for that series.

But I’ll also be putting the information about that and many other things into our monthly email newsletter, so to really stay informed about what we’re doing here at IndieFilmNYC.com, please sign up for our news letter in the form below.
