The October 7th war has, in certain parts of society, ushered in a sweeping sense of messianic fervor in the country that Israel’s redemption is close. Wars and disasters have traditionally been fertile grounds for purveyors of apocalyptic prophecies, but the current enthusiasm is spreading beyond the traditional religious groups and also drawing in secular people as well. Amit Varshizky, an historian and essayist, has researched this growing fervor in Israel. He spoke with Arieh O’Sullivan of the wave, what’s behind it and why human nature seeks redemption.
