Sermon Notes—"Are You Serious?"
"We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ."
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text
29"Why do you contend with me? You have all transgressed against me, declares the Lord. 30In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion. 31And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, 'We are free, we will come no more to you'? 32Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 33"How well you direct your course to seek love! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways. 34Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of the guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things 35you say, 'I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.' Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying, 'I have not sinned.' 36How much you go about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria. 37From it too you will come away with your hands on your head, for the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them. 1"If a man divorces his wife and she goes from him and becomes another man's wife, will he return to her? Would not that land be greatly polluted? You have played the whore with many lovers; and would you return to me? declares the Lord. 2Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see! Where have you not been ravished? By the waysides you have sat awaiting lovers like an Arab in the wilderness. You have polluted the land with your vile whoredom. 3Therefore the showers have been withheld, and the spring rain has not come; yet you have the forehead of a whore; you refuse to be ashamed. 4Have you not just now called to me, 'My father, you are the friend of my youth— 5will he be angry forever, will he be indignant to the end?' Behold, you have spoken, but you have done all the evil that you could."
Jeremiah 2:29–3:5 (ESV)

Israel appealed to God for mercy but was denied (3:4-5). Why?

1. They appealed for mercy, but REFUSED CORRECTION . (2:29-32)

1Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Proverbs 12:1 (ESV)

11My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Proverbs 3:11–12 (ESV)

2. They appealed for mercy, but were DOUBLE MINDED. (33-37)

6But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James 1:6–8 (ESV)

8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:8 (ESV)

Therefore, even though their appeal sounded contrite, it wasn't SINCERE . There was no GODLY SORROW over their sin.

9As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.
2 Corinthians 7:9–11 (ESV)

So God continued to DISCIPLINE them, not because He DESPISED them, but because He LOVED them.

5And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives."
Hebrews 12:5–6 (ESV)
