Please join us for this literary event that includes selected readings by the author, Q & A and book sales/signing.
About the book:
In 1899, during an era of racial terror at home and imperial conquest abroad, the United States sent 70,000 troops to suppress the Filipinos’ struggle for independence. The deployment included three regiments of the famed African American Buffalo Soldiers. Among them was David Fagen, a twenty-year-old private in the Twenty-Fourth Infantry. Fagen deserted to the side of the Filipino revolutionaries becoming a guerrilla leader of renown. For two years, Fagen bedeviled his American pursuers who were never able to capture or kill him.
“With dedicated sleuthing, informed speculation, and gifted storytelling style, Morey sheds light on David Fagen, an African American insurgent against U.S. colonialism, who has long remained as elusive to historians as he was to the American soldiers that chased him through the Philippine forests over a century ago.” Paul Kramer, Professor at Vanderbilt, author of Blood of Government, historian of Philippines war and its racist legacy.
Michael Morey, a writer and independent historian, lives in Forestville with his wife, Barbara Baer.
