We’re talking today with Rocky Sickmann who works with “Folds of Honor” -- a nonprofit that provides scholarships to the children and spouses of U.S. military men and women disabled or killed in service to their country. He served in the United States Marine Corps for six years and was one of 65 Americans taken hostage in Iran on Nov. 4, 1979. Sickmann remained a hostage for 444 days before being released on January 21, 1981. Three months later, Sickmann was Honorably Discharged and received several accolades during his service including the Prisoner of War Medal, The Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Award of Valor, and Good Conduct Medal. Sickmann’s personal diary, Iranian Hostage: A Personal Diary of 444 Days in Captivity , is the only known diary to have been smuggled out of Iran and published. Rocky was in Cape Girardeau on Wednesday, November 8, and spoke at KRCU’s Veterans Breakfast at VFW Post #3838.
