If the US had pulled out of Afghanistan, it doesn't necessarily mean New Zealand would have done the same. The Government has agreed to send three more non-combat military personnel there, to meet a request from NATO and the United States. It comes as Donald Trump has decided the US must continue fighting in Afghanistan, instead of pulling out, as he earlier planned. Defence Minister Mark Mitchell told Larry Williams New Zealand makes its own decisions on issues like this. "That would be a decision that would be taken by cabinet in consultation with the chief of defence forces and defence." He said the same process will be used if we're asked for another contribution but we won't consider sending anyone to a combat role.
