Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer best known for his detective fiction and the creation of the character Sherlock Holmes, a character who unless you have been living under a rock, still dominates popular culture today. Sir Arthur was a Victorian to the bone, and cherished the ideals of duty, chivalry, honor, and respectability far above any others. Though Doyle was originally a physician, his lack of patients and love of stories catapulted him into the realm of writing, launching a prolific career with works of fantasy and science fiction, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and history. Sir Arthur was additionally a very gifted public speaker, and he used his talents later in life to discuss and investigate the world of spiritualism, and yes, by spiritualism I do mean the supernatural phenomena. If you are as confused by this as I am, don’t worry, we’ll get there as we get deeper into the podcast. He was also a badass cricket player, one of the first motorists in England, and following in the footsteps of his own Sherlock Holmes, actually solved a few mysteries of his own! All this and so much more to come for this week’s episode, so let’s get things rolling and learn a little bit more about the amazing life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
