Narrated by Rachel Griffiths, The Archibald will take viewers behind the scenes and away from the media front-line, as the series follows the artists and their sitters as they strive to win the most iconic prize in Australian arts.
In 2017 the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) provided cameras unprecedented access to competitors, their work and the hidden internal processes by which the Archibald is judged, hung, announced and exhibited.
The Archibald follows eight artists journeys to the Archibald with two of the eight artists featured in the series selected in the Archibald Prize – former Prize winner Nicholas Harding (sitter John Olsen) and three-time finalist Yvette Coppersmith (sitter Professor Gillian Triggs).
As well as following former Archibald Prize winners Tim Storrier (sitter McLean Edwards) Wendy Sharpe (sitter Elena Kats-Chernin) and former finalists George Gittoes (sitter Julian Assange), Nick Stathopoulos (sitter Isla Fisher), Jason Phu (sitter Lin Jong) and a newcomer to the scene Tessa McOnie (sitter Trevor Jamieson) all vying to have their portraits hung in the prestigious exhibition.
Their complete journeys from the artists’ first approach to their sitters through to their final portraits are captured across Australia as well as overseas in Afghanistan, Hollywood, London, and Paris.
The Archibald airs Sundays from September 12 at 7.30pm on Foxtel Arts. Following its live broadcast on Foxtel Arts, The Archibald will be available to watch from Foxtel’s on demand library.
