We recently watched an hilarious movie on Netflix called The Break Up with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. They play a young married couple who are struggling with many issues, primarily communication. One of the best scenes was one in which they were having a very heated argument. What made it great was that it was true!

She was mad at him and he didn’t know why. Even as she is explaining herself to him, he hears what she is saying, but isn’t able to interpret what she really means. Take two minutes and watch it.

“You cannot force someone to accept an expression of love. You can only offer it. If it is not accepted, you must respect the other person’s decision.” Gary Chapman

Embracing Our Differences

Men and women are different. We speak differently. We love differently. We have different expectations. During the first couple years of our marriage one of the most important lessons we learned was that we were different. In this episode of the show we explore Gary Chapman’s monumental book The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts.

I (Ricky) prefer that Johana express her love to me through physical touch and words of affirmation. Coming home from work to a warm hug, a kiss on the lips, followed by a sincere “I love you” is all I need to keep the love tank full. On the other hand, Johana likes gifts and quality time. So this week I surprised her with flowers. It’s simple, but it keeps her tank full.

Question: What is your love language? What is your spouse’s love language?

Invest in Your Marriage

Often we get asked for advice about marriage, best advice is to invest in it. Watching this show is a great investment in your marriage. So is reading books. We read books about finance and travel and health, but hopefully you plan to be married for the rest of your life so it would be a idea to invest a little time into your marriage. A coworker asked me the other day if I was a marriage counselor. I said no, but I gave him a book that I know will change his marriage. We’re going to share that same book with you on this episode.
