Is there something you are dragging your feet on? Something you know you need to do but, just have not taken the first step?

I want to submit to you that you may be in Fear. Today we will explore some tips and I will show you a fear setting exercise that will break you out of those fears!

Fear can be so paralyzing. It can grapple us and make us feel helpless. I am often asked “How do I overcome fear, especially when the fear is related to pursuing what I know I am supposed to do?”

I believe that one the first steps in overcoming fear is to acknowledge that you are afraid, but also realize that fear does not come from God. It is NOT his best plan for us. 2 Timothy 1:7 says “God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind”. God’s best for us is to experience perfect peace, joy, and love.

Nehemiah was tasked to build a wall. It was no sooner that he began his great work that he was faced with adversity. His response was amazing. In verse 8-10 of chapter 6 he responds. “Nothing you are saying is happening, you are making it up in your head, they are all trying to frighten us thinking their hands will get to weak for the work and it will not be completed, but I prayed, strengthen my hands.” His response to the adversity was to press through with even greater determination. He was so firm in his conviction that he was doing God’s work he would not let anything stop him. We can be like Nehemiah. When fear comes knocking at our door, in whatever form, we can turn that fear into determination.

Sometimes we feel hesitation when we set out to do what we know we are supposed to do. This is actually a good thing. It shows us that the enemy is resisting us in this area, but, it also means we are going in the right direction. Steven Presfield says, “The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more we should be sure we should do it.” Don’t allow that hesitation to stop you, allow it to propel you!

One indicator of fear is Procrastination. Procrastination comes in many forms, but can be poison to our purpose if we give it a foothold. We procrastinate for several reasons.

1. Guilt or Shame.

Often we feel shame if we have stepped out and failed. Fear of failure is a huge stalemate to moving into our purpose. The enemy will try to create a resume of failure when it was only one incidence. Know this, right now you are forgiven by Christ. You are continually cleansed and made new by Christ; He washes our failures and remembers them no more. Don’t allow the lies of failure, guilt or shame stop you from living all of what God has for you.

2. Caring What Other People Think.

The reality is other people do not think about you as much as you think they do. We are hardwired to think about ourselves, but the reality is that others don’t really think about us. Don’t let the perceived notion of others thoughts or words stop you from doing what God is calling you to do.

3. A Vague, Nebulous Feeling.

We may not understand why we are afraid but we just know we have a very uncomfortable feeling. If this is you I want you to try this exercise.

In this weeks podcast episode, I show you a powerful exercise will not only reveal to you what you are afraid of, but how you can determine the source of that fear so you can come up with a solution to that fear. Knowledge is power. If you can assess the what and why behind fear, you can take the step to conquering that fear and continuing into the purpose and plan that God has for you!
