In portions of the lives told are portions of other people’s lives retold. In portions of my text are portions of other people’s text to be found.
I have deliberately taken what others have written, emulated them, sometimes copied exactly what they have written, and in all other ways expressed my admiration and interest in them by allusion, irony, and adaptation. This book has even taken its title from another book, that famously by Diogenes Laërtius, to whose philosophers my philosophers may be referred. However, do not suppose that these persons are necessarily identical.
